Halloween Toastmasters Speech: Skeletons in the Closet

Better to post late than never, right??

Halloween season often sparks the imagination. As much as we human souls have the incredible capacity to love, we are plagued by fear. Fear lurks in the deepest darkest crevices of our ego-being. Memories and illusions cause us to doubt and shrink; skeletons in our metaphorical closets.

Greetings fellow Toastmasters and welcome guests; in the festive harvest season, my personal favourite holiday is All Hallows Eve, otherwise known as Celtic New Year or Samhain (pronounced Sau-in). Traditionally this was a celebration of thanksgiving and honour of those who have passed to the underworld. These days we wear costumes and masks to scare away evil spirits, when the veil between this world and the next is at its thinnest, magic is at its strongest, and illusions rule. Symbolically this celebration allows us to imagine and become someone else for a colourful change, to turn over a new leaf. What would you like to leave behind? Who would you like to be?

Mr. Deepak Chopra was inspired by the Persian mystical poet Rumi when he wrote: “Our false self is made up of beliefs, expectations, interpretations, memories and fears. Our true Self is rooted in love, awareness and creativity.”

We all have thoughts and feelings as we all have physical skeletons, but would you agree we cannot see them on the surface very easily? Surface wounds are easy to see, and more obvious to treat. It’s easier to ignore and bury what we can’t see, and illusions besides. As we explore and clean out our closet space, we discover what we are made of; what suits us and still desire we keep, what no longer serves us we may cast away. We humans possess the power of choice to change our minds, with the assistance of tools. We have freedom to question why we fear that which may help us learn & change by following through the illusion and be aware as we create & grow. Would you agree it’s easier said than done? Change can be scary. Memories of pain, trauma, judgement and rejection, even fears of success may hold us back. Our potential is unlimited yet personal evolution of true Self is challenging in the face of fear.

On my journey I have experienced, learned and practiced energetic modalities including Reiki and acupressure which help address and shift patterns which no longer serve us, uncovering forgiveness, peace, gratitude & optimism for well-being & balance. These techniques are tools which have offered me alternative healing solutions of mental and emotional upsets by offering hands-on support enabling space to acknowledge and release terrible horrors and illusions alike of my personal skeletons as I actively face my fears. Simply put, there are holistic ways to clean out dirty laundry and soothe the soul not yet common knowledge in our Western world of stress and fear, where band-aid solutions are the usual approach.

In his first inaugural address Franklin D. Roosevelt said: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.”

Consider fear as an acronym: False Evidence Appearing Real. We experience fear when we imagine or confront immediate danger or the unknown. When we only assume the truth based on negative memories and illusions, our perspective may be jaded. We must take responsibility for our actions and re-actions, by opening the closet door and stop hiding. Might the truth be not as scary as we imagine? If we choose to allow skeletons to stay in the closet, they ferment creating a greater detrimental effect, torturing our souls, and making us sick. Get rid of those skeletons; face and release the Demons! Let the light of your true spirit shine through! I invite you to honour and offer gratitude for the learning experienced on your journey; you’ve earned it.

Do you feel a sense of accomplishment when you overcome an obstacle and clean out your space? Imagine how free your soul would feel if all the skeletons were removed and exorcised! I may be preaching to the choir, as any Toastmaster is well aware of the opportunity for personal growth outside of your comfort zone. I encourage you this Celtic New Year, this Halloween season to continue to be all you can be. Enrich your everlasting soul for this lifetime and the next, by cleaning out your closet and healing to make room for light and love creatively.
