However I am very confused by there being so much info produced by Margaret here and on Youtube site.. Are ALL the google info and YouTube videos on the Melio site or does one have to search the internet? I am purchasing the Exercises for Osteoarthritis book from Amazon. Now do I need to purchase the videos, or are those now online as I seemed to see them today January 29 2022.
Last question, can you do a televisit consult with Alberta and BC? Cost? Thanks

Margaret is unable to provide medical advice in the absence of an assessment. If you are located in Ontario you can request a telehealth consult here. http://melioguide.com/services/telehealth-physiotherapy-online-consultations/

Otherwise, you should consult with a Physiotherapist close to you.

I have found a pilates teacher trained in osteoporosis in North Surrey if that is of any use for you. He does both reformer & mat pilates & is so full of useful information. I am -3.7 & have practised safely without a fracture for 2 years. Best wishes Liz

I am 72 and have -3.4 osteoporosis in my spine so I bought a weighted vest a year ago and wore it for walking and squats. Unfortunately I started getting slight sciatic type symptoms, and I have recently been diagnosed with L4 over L5 Spondylolisthesis. I assume the vest is not a good idea for me anymore? Also I have been advised to avoid extension exercises for the condition, but that is at odds with the advice to avoid flexion for osteoporosis! I have your Better Bones book and would be grateful if you could advise which exercises I should concentrate on. I live in the UK and unfortunately in my area there is not so much advice or awareness among Pilates and yoga teachers or other practitioners on how to care for osteoporosis.
I’m so glad I found you!
Diana

Hi Robin,
The term severe osteoporosis is usually meant that you have low BMD scores and you have had fragility fracture(s). The decision to get a weighted vest depends on 1. your posture and your ability to keep a good posture under the added load of the weighed vest and 2. the intent of the weighted vest. If you intend on wearing the vest while walking it will be less effective than if you wore it during weighted squats (assuming you are ready for weighted squats). If you have not been doing the “Floor M” exercise and other spinal strengthening I encourage you to start at a level that is right for you. Your PT should be able to guide you or begin with the Posture strengthening exercises and progress to the Beginner Spine strengthening then finally the Floor M.
I hope this helps you to understand the line between beneficial and dangerous.
Margaret

I have gotten mixed information from different health care professionals on whether wearing a weighted vest is safe for severe spinal osteoporosis (PT says OK, Doctors say not OK). My dexa for spine is -3.4. I am of average build and 57 years old. I am curious where the line is between beneficial and dangerous.
Thanks
Robin

Hi Liz, It is awesome to read your dedication and enthusiasm in building your bones. The protocol you suggest is not one I have seen before. All the studies I have seen using the weighted vest involved wearing the vest for shorter durations. I have several clients that began wearing their vest all day and they all developed plantar fasciitis. I would suggest wearing it during your exercise sessions (when appropriate) with exercises such as squat, lunges, heel raise, step ups. During walks. If you want to extend the time I would gradually -increase to 90 minutes 3 times a day. I am not comfortable with the idea of it being worn it 6 – 7 hours /day unless you are up and about the whole day. But then, I just got back from a hiking holiday and we had our packs on for 4 – 5 hours /day so if you build up to it I guess it is not much different.
No comment on the PEMF.
Keep well,
Margaret

I know this is an older post, but is this still a vest you would recommend? My concern is getting too hot while walking. I really warm up while walking and often have to remove a layer and tie it around my waist. Any experience with this issue? Thanks, Patty
